Geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankments ? 3D discrete numerical analyses of the interaction and mobilization mechanisms

Three-dimensional numerical analyses using the discrete element method are conducted to investigate several fundamental aspects related soil-structure interaction and mobilization mechanisms in geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankments. The contributions of soil arching, tensioned membrane effect, friction interaction, subsoil support, punching failure investigated. results indicated that inclusion geosynthetic enhances stress transfer from piles due action, distribution is more uniform as compared piled embankment without geosynthetic. However, tension not maximum occurs near pile edge. Numerical also proved provides substantial support reduces reinforcement while shear stresses mobilized along upper lower sides soil-geosynthetic interfaces. These should be considered theoretical models produce a realistic approach. Finally, ten available design methods reviewed assess performance analytical models. showed Pham, CUR 226 guideline, EBGEO standard agree well with generally better than all other methods.
